We spent the opening days with a maintenance crew working along the N3 corridor near Van Reenen. Mornings started cold and damp, then climbed quickly once the sun cleared the escarpment. The first lesson was layering. A lightweight moisture-wicking base under a cotton drill shirt worked better than a heavy fleece, because the fleece trapped sweat and made the hi-vis vest cling. By midday, the crew was stripping down to the drill shirt and rolling the vest into a tool bag. The tradeoff was clear: comfort during the warm hours versus quick access when a truck pulled off the shoulder.

Care protocols also surfaced early. After two days of rain, one set of hi-vis coveralls started showing faint reflective tape separation at the cuff. The crew had been machine washing them with standard detergent and tumble drying on high heat, which accelerates tape breakdown. Switching to a mild detergent, cold wash, and line drying added noticeable life to the garments. It is a small change, but it matters when you are budgeting for replacements across a full team.
The week ended with a simple conclusion: gear performs differently in real conditions than it does on a spec sheet. The crew adjusted their choices based on weather, surface, and task frequency, not on what looked best in the catalogue.
