Straight answers to the questions we hear most from safety officers, procurement teams, and workers who want to get the right equipment the first time.
Check the label for the SANS 1397 reference and the class rating. Vests that have been washed repeatedly or exposed to heavy sun can lose reflective performance even if the fabric looks fine. If the reflective tape is cracked, peeling, or dull, replace the garment. When in doubt, compare the vest against a new one under a flashlight at night.
Treated cotton has a chemical finish applied to the outer surface, while inherently FR fabrics like modacrylic or aramid have flame resistance built into the fibre itself. Treated cotton is often more breathable and affordable, but the protection can diminish with improper washing or industrial laundering. Inherent fabrics hold their rating for the life of the garment but tend to cost more upfront.
No. Standard detergents often contain fabric softeners, chlorine bleach, or other additives that can interfere with the FR treatment on cotton blends. Use a mild detergent without bleach or softeners, and avoid washing FR gear with oily or heavily soiled clothing. Always follow the manufacturer's care label — some FR fabrics require specific wash temperatures to keep their protective rating.
You need about a thumb's width between your longest toe and the steel cap. The boot should feel snug around the heel and midfoot without pinching. Remember that boots will stretch slightly with wear, especially leather models. Try them on at the end of the day when your feet are slightly swollen, and always wear the same socks you plan to use on the job.
The arc rating, measured in calories per square centimetre, tells you the maximum incident energy the fabric can withstand before breaking open. It is not a guarantee of zero burns — it indicates the point at which the garment would fail. Match the arc rating to the hazard level of your specific task. If you work near live electrical equipment, check the task's incident energy analysis before choosing a coverall.
If your question is about a specific regulation, a particular fabric, or how to choose between two products, the answers page covers more ground. For anything related to your own site conditions or procurement process, the contact page puts you in touch with someone who can look at your situation directly.
The resources section holds downloadable care charts, sizing guides, and standard comparison tables that safety officers can print and share with their teams.
