Field Notes & Common Questions
Straight answers to the questions we hear most from safety officers and crew leads when they are deciding what to issue or buy next.
Look for the SANS 1397 label inside the garment, not just a generic reflective strip. The label should state the class of the garment and the standard year. If the label is missing or faded, treat the vest as non-compliant. For road work and night shifts, check that the reflective tape covers the required area and that the background fabric is the correct fluorescent colour.
Treated cotton has a chemical finish applied to the outer surface, which can wash out over time if you use the wrong detergent. Inherently FR fabrics like modacrylic or aramid blends have flame resistance built into the fibre itself, so it cannot wash out. Treated cotton is often cheaper and more breathable, but it requires stricter laundering discipline. Inherent FR is more forgiving in the wash but costs more upfront.
Skip fabric softener and bleach entirely. Both leave residues that can interfere with the FR properties. Wash in warm water with a mild detergent, and hang dry if possible. High heat in a tumble dryer can degrade the treatment on FR-treated cotton. Also, keep coveralls separate from heavily soiled work clothes to avoid contaminating the fabric with flammable residues like grease or oil.
For indoor warehouse work on flat surfaces, composite toes are lighter and do not conduct cold in winter. They also pass through metal detectors without setting them off, which matters if you move between secure zones. Steel toes are still the better choice for outdoor construction where you need maximum impact resistance and a lower price point. Both meet the same impact standard, so the decision comes down to weight, climate, and site security rules.
Replace any garment where the reflective tape is peeling, cracking, or no longer returns light at night. Fluorescent fabric also fades with UV exposure and washing, usually becoming noticeably duller after six to twelve months of regular outdoor use. If your crew works night shifts, inspect the gear monthly. For day-only crews, a quarterly check is usually enough.
Yes, but the embroidery thread and backing material must be FR-rated or non-flammable. Standard polyester embroidery thread can melt and drip onto the skin in a flash fire. Use Nomex thread or aramid backing, and keep the logo area away from seams and pockets where the fabric is already stressed. Always confirm with the garment manufacturer before adding any customisation.
