We wanted to map out the gaps between what manufacturers claim and what crews report back. So we spent the morning going through notes from safety officers, warehouse supervisors, and mechanics who had written in about specific failures — a reflective strip peeling at the seam, a zip that seized after exposure to degreaser, a boot sole that went slick on wet concrete.
What the notes pointed to
Three themes kept coming up. The first was high-visibility gear that stops being visible because the background fabric fades unevenly, not because the tape wears out. The second was flame-resistant coveralls where the laundering instructions are ignored on site, which quietly reduces the protective layer. The third was fit — not sizing charts, but how a garment sits on a person who is bending, reaching, and carrying tools all day.
None of this is new to anyone who works in the trade. But it tells us where our next reviews and comparisons should focus. Instead of another generic roundup, we want to run longer-term tests that track specific failure points over a realistic service life, and then publish the data in a way that a procurement manager can actually use.
The most useful feedback we get is rarely about a brand name. It is about a seam, a buckle, a pocket placement, or how a collar sits under a hard hat.
What the next few issues will cover
From this session we have a working list of articles. One will look at the first week of wear on a new range of work trousers, noting where the fabric holds up and where it does not. Another will follow up on an earlier review to see what changed after the initial assessment, particularly around comfort claims and durability. We are also planning a closer look at how different layering systems perform for outdoor workers who move between cold mornings and hot afternoons.
The point is not to chase trends. It is to build a record of what works in South African conditions — heat, dust, humidity, and the kind of physical work that does not pause for a product launch.
